DIY Photobooth

Spent a few days this week putting together a photobooth for a friends wedding.  Was a fun project.  Had to hack my timelapse cable for the Lumix GH2 and run it into an arcade red button.  Now pushing the button starts a 3 seconds countdown and fires a shot – which is automatically displayed on the LCD below the camera.  Nice.

The New Zealand Collection – Magazine

Recently I’ve been looking at digital magazines for tablets and have been quite disappointed. They are mostly just the print version scaled down. So I wanted to have a go at creating a really simple New Zealand photography magazine specifically for digital delivery. The idea was to make it as a free PDF – PDF’s are versatile and most devices can handle them. No need for tricky apps. Check out the link to the magazine below…

The 365 day challenge

I started a photo challenge on Flickr.com – every day for 1 year I need to take a photo and add it to my page.  I’m 10 days in and it really is proving to be difficult to get something different every day.  From looking at other people that have taken the challenge I can see that they all have dramatically increased their photography skills.  So hopefully this time next year I will be taking some bad ass photos :)

On the 21st October 2012 I will take my last photo and the epic photography adventure will be over.  You can follow the progress on my Flickr 365 page here or view the slideshow below.

Below is what I have taken so far:  (click the full screen icon in the bottom right corner for best viewing)

Natural Light Shoot

Did a quick shoot today in the style of Australian portrait photographer of the year Sue Bryce who I have been working with lately. She uses only natural light and her results are phenomenal. The photos below are lit using 2 pieces of polystyrene. Nice and easy setup and much more reliable than my flashes.

New York Timelapse

On my last night in New York yesterday I went around and quickly shot some timelapse of the city. Best viewed Full Screen in 720p HD.

I found my hotel room window opened – so bought a suction cup camera holder from B&H Photo and hung my Panasonic Lumix GH2 out the window. Jammed the strap in the window for safety :)

Timelapse in New York

You can buy one of the cheap mounts here for $28 USD.

The timelapse was done using an inexpensive timelapse remote that I picked up in Hong Kong for $10 (you can find various remotes listed on Ebay here).  I shot RAW images (mostly 1 every 3 seconds), processed them in Adobe Lightroom and exported out as full size JPG’s.  This meant I could zoom in using After Effects to give a subtle motion effect.

Elisha in the fog 2

I needed to shoot just 1 more character to complete the ‘Importance Of Being Earnest’ programme which goes into print very soon. Check out the other shots here.

This time we wanted something dark to reflect the character. I shot these pics at 11pm in a cold & foggy Christchurch park with available light from the street lamp.

Earnest Promo Shoot

A local theatre group is putting on a production of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ directed by David Sheard. I was asked to shoot some promo pictures for them at Otahuna Lodge just out of Christchurch.  Below is just a selection of the many shots I took in 3 hours.

I was lucky enough to convince Erin McLean from Inspire Images to assist on the shoot.  Thanks also to Lakefly ProductionsLightworkx Photography for the loan of gear. All shot on a Canon 550D.

Christchurch Earthquake 22 February 2011

A devastating and violent 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch yesterday.

Below are some images and video I took from the past 36 hours after the quake.

I grabbed my video camera right after the quake stopped and this is what I got….

For the description of each picture just click on it and it’ll take you to my Flickr page – although most just speak for themselves.
