How to make a fake grand piano

25 Jul

So for the Dave Wallace video “Broken” I wanted to use a beat up old grand piano. It turns out old grand pianos are extremely rare in CHCH and if you do find one they are expensive. So I decided to build a fake one from an old upright. As fate would have it my next door neighbor had an old upright in his back yard!

Step 1 – Get some people who love to shift heavy things or just love being in photos

The original upright

Step 2 – Pull off the 200kg + cast iron back

Split in 2

Step 3 – Recycle what you can from the old upright

Destructing a piano

Step 4 – Add a frame (get your dad to test it)

Taking shape

Step 5 – Give it a bottom

Adding a bottom

Step 6 – Sexy it up

Sexy curves

And the final result….

The final product

We added rubber bands to every key so they actually worked.  The lid is made from all the panels of the old upright.

In the final video it looks like a fully functional grand piano.  I give it an A+

Don’t forget to check out the piano in action here.

Dave Wallace – Broken

6 Apr

Well here it is – my first music video with vampires!

“Broken” is the outstanding debut single for Dave Wallace.  This video was shot in an abandoned building in downtown CHCH on the Canon 7D.

The song can be PURCHASED NOW from the iTunes store here.

Check out Dave’s website for more details.

Simon Waterhouse took some great pics from the day – which you can check out here.

Check out how I made the grand piano here.

Rare Shot Blue – Dolli

1 Apr

Got a chance to direct this video for Rare Shot Blue – a brilliant musical duo based in CHCH. Was a whole bunch of fun to make – got my brother John to cut the top off an old Ford mk3 Cortina, turning it into a convertible.  It is the most intensive edit I have done for a music video – taking inspiration from Eminems 3AM – which I think is a pretty cool look and suits the music.

The whole video was captured using the Canon 5D mk2 DSLR (@ 30fps) and then some of the performance was sped up to 200%.

Check out Rare Shot Blues Myspace page.

Broken – Behind the Scenes

22 Mar

Here are a few picks from my latest music video “Broken” by Dave Wallace.

We shot on Thursday and the video is edited and due out later this week….

Thanks to Bryce Holtshousen (art department) for taking these pics.

Luna flew down from Auckland for the day to play the vampire.

Me & Dan filming Dave in a big bird shit infested warehouse.

Luna in a bath. Andy (grip / gaffer), Dan (camera op) and I prep for a shot.

Luna in amongst some sheets.

In the bath.  Not sure where we got the hot water from but Ben & Nan (our PA’s) arrived on set with a chilli bin filled with boiling water.

“Broken” – music video pre production

9 Mar

Went over to Heathcote valley to check out the old abandoned Malt Works for an upcoming music video for a local musician Dave Wallace…. it’s very cool but not quite right for what we are after. Good spot for snaps though.

Possible location?

Found this little tool shed on the way home – it’s part of some church grounds…

Sleepy Age – Cat Face

18 Jan

Sleepy Age won the RDU Roundup competition for 2009. As part of their prize they got a single recorded at The Sitting Room, mastered at Tandem Studios and a video shot by me. Thanks to the Sitting Room for the use of their studio for the video. Check out the bands Myspace page

Pretty cruisy shoot – shot the performance up at The Sitting Room studios – only took a couple of hours and then a few days later went to Hagely park, ran the dog around, played with some flowers and climbed out on a branch.

Shot most of it on the Canon L 24-105mm. A lens that has since returned to Canon NZ. I miss it dearly :(

Luke Watt – Blessed and the Meek

14 Dec

The debut music video for Melbourne’s Luke Watt. The song comes from the album “Examples of Farewell Speech”.

Damien and myself were over in Melbourne for a wedding. Decided to go out and shoot a basic video for Luke (who we just met) one night in St. Kilda. Took about an hour to shoot.

Jimmy Maher – Golden Rule

14 Oct

Went to high school with Jimmy and we even played in a Rockquest band together! He (and the rest of the band) needed a vid for his self funded first single. So he flew me up and we shot this in a few hours on the trusty Canon 5D.
